The visual condition known as macular degeneration (MD) has been shown in studies to target 10 million Americans. That makes it the leading cause of blindness in those 55 and older ? even more than glaucoma and cataracts combined.
Basically, MD targets the macula, the center of the retina. The macula is responsible for central vision and seeing in fine detail, and includes such ?straight-ahead? activities as reading, driving, fine work, recognizing faces, and watching television. When the macula is damaged, this sharp, central vision is blurred. These effects can be slow and subtle or very quick, and either one or both eyes may be affected.
But while MD is not painful, it may prevent you from doing the things you enjoy, and can affect your life, as well as that of your friends and family. And as of yet, macular degeneration is incurable.
However, researchers and healthcare professionals continue to make great strides in the study of macular degeneration. For instance, a groundbreaking study conducted by The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has found that vitamin supplementation may hold benefits for MD. In the study, high-dose supplements -- containing such nutrients as vitamins C and E, the mineral zinc, and high concentrations of two antioxidants, beta-carotene and dietary lutein ? were given to those at high risk of developing advanced macular degeneration. This supplemental blend was shown to effectively reduce MD risks by about 25%.
